The DMP-BD85 employs the PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus. Developed in collaboration with Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory, this high image processing technology reproduces clear, vivid colors that are faithful to the original film. Panasonic's Blu-ray Disc players employ high precision 4:4:4 signal technology, which working in tandem with PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus processes each pixel of the Blu-ray Disc video signal in the horizontal direction to compliment vertical direction processing. P4HD (Pixel Precision Progressive Processing for HD) is another technology that contributes to the superior picture quality of the Blu-ray players. P4HD processes more than 15 billion pixels per second and applies the optimal processing to every pixel. Panasonic's Blu-ray Disc players further utilize 16-level motion detection to categorize the image motion of each pixel into one of 16 levels; diagonal processing to detect diagonals and correct the pixels accordingly; 1080p up-conversion to up-convert content recorded in the 480i/p or 720p format to 1080p. This Blu-ray Disc player also provides 1080/24p output, reproducing cinema images from a Blu-ray Disc and DVD in their original 24p form with no need for conversion--enabling you to enjoy cinema images in the same format used in cinema with a 1080/24p-compatible TV. Complimenting the HD audio codecs, the BD85 Blu-ray Disc player features 96kHz surround re-master, a function that enhances the sound quality of CDs and other sources, and even improves the quality of the multi-channel audio data on Blu-ray Discs and DVDs.

Excellent player March 18, 2010 RR (OH) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
This is my first blu-ray player. I bought it a few days ago because it offers 7.1 analog out. I didn't really need the wireless capability but since it came with everything it needs for wireless, I was able to take the player out of the box, connect it to my TV and stereo, create a Netflix account on the fly, setup the wireless connection with my home router and begin to watch a movie in about 20 minutes ! This has been the best experience. I never used an online streaming service and never had a Netflix account. Setting up wireless and Netflix was a breeze. I have not used the 7.1 analog yet since I am waiting to connect to my 7.1 amp but even the stereo sound for movies is excellent. The picture quality for both Netflix instant and DVD's are fantastic. I couldn't be happier. A very friendly player. You can also view other online content such as Youtube, Picasa web albums, weather etc.
Easy to to use and quality you expect March 20, 2010 M. Dunbar (Englewood, NJ) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
Traded a Panasonic DMP-BD80 for this DMP-BD85 for the wireless features. We loved the DMP-BD80 and this player is equally as good but better since you get the wireless capability and the blu-ray discs load up twice as fast as compared with the DMP-BD80. We are pleased with this player and Panasonic has a great reputation for quality and longevity. Setup of the wireless features was pretty intuitive. Of course, we buy everything possible through Amazon since the service is consistently wonderful.
Great for my first Blu Ray Player March 14, 2010 Cateyes (west lafayette IN) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is my first Blu Ray player and so far I love it. Set up was not too bad, although the instruction booklet is not very helpful - not sure what all the pages are wasted on, but could definitely include more step by step instruction. Wireless connection was easily established - I use a Mac and Airport Extreme, no problem. The picture is beautiful and sound is great. Netflix streaming also worked very nicely - no interruptions and very good picture quality. A few picky points I don't like - the disc drawer doesn't seem to close when you gently push on it like most dvd players do (including an old Panasonic dvd player I have). This is not a big deal, but you have to push the remote or the top button. The power button and the disc drawer button are on the top corners of the unit, not on the front. I have another component sitting on top of the player, so that doesn't work so well. The remote seems pretty easy to use and the buttons are reasonable size (some remotes have tiny little buttons crammed together). The on screen menu is a bit awkward - figuring out how to change the weather panel to my local area was trial and error. Most people probably realize this, but if you're buying your first blu ray player most (all?) do not come with the necessary HDMI cable, which can cost you quite a bit depending on the quality. Overall this seems like a great unit for the price.
I'm speechless. March 22, 2010 Richard (fl, usa) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Yay!
The BD 85 is a dramatic improvement for me over my BD 35 which I had thought was great already. Crisp picture, incredible sound (even on my home theater in a box), easy setup, easy Netflix, smooth streaming on my broadband (hardwired), fast BD load time, and remote syncs with my Panasonic plasma. Honestly, this is a great machine. Wow!
New Panasonic Blu Ray April 24, 2010 G. Burkett (Malibu, Ca) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This Panasonic has the best overall feature set including easy hook up Wireless, Netfilix without the discs and a front loading SD card slot. This feature ties a lot of devices together and is great for showing all your digital camera pictures in HD.Just take the SD card out of the Camera and slide it in the slot..Amazingly,it also plays your HD camcorder videos, again by simply taking the SDHC card directly from the camera to the Blu Ray Player. No wires,no making DVDs on some computer, no adapter hassle, just beautiful home HD movies instantly. I have a Canon VIXIA HF10,so there are no brand compatibility issues. Every AVCHD file plays quickly in full HD.I have been waiting for Panasonic to release a Blu Ray player with Net Flix and Amazon movie downloading to match the feature set of their competitiors. THe DMP 85 has this and more through the Viera Cast button. The difference with the DMP 85 and 65 is the wireless networking. The DMP 85 found the network on the second try and hooked up to my Cisco wireless "N" network without any problems. I was able to view Netflix Movies after visiting the Netflix site and entering a code number that popped up on the instruction screen. Since I am a current Netflix by mail subscriber, Movies were available immediately after I entered them in my seperate "Download" que on line. Video quality was excellent and exceeded my expectations for wireless video transmission. I did not try the Amazon rentals or the other features yet. The Blu Ray picture quality on my 65" was excellent, and passed the torture tests from problem discs with flying colors. Importantly,it actually loaded fast enough to not irritate me as my previous Blu Ray players always did.
I strongly reccomend this player for both it's picture quality , quick loading time, and wireless downloading capabilities. Also if you own a Digital Camera that uses SD/SDHC cards, you will never go back to looking at your pictures on a computer after you see them in full HD on your big Screen. If you are even considering buying a HD camcorder that uses SDHC cards, this unit future proofs you. Just putting the card in the front of this unit and seeing your broadcast quality home HD movies appear on your big screen without a single connection will really make you smile. This player finally provides some of the long delayed promises of the digital future where everything actually works without endless wires and adapters.
